Mayor Gerald R. “Ronnie” Michael

G.R."Ronnie" Michael

Gerald R. “Ronnie” Michael was born and raised in Albemarle.  He graduated from North Stanly High School and received an Applied Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Stanly Community College.  He also attended Pfeiffer College and the North Carolina Justice Academy for specialized instructions.  Ronnie retired in 2011 after serving the citizens of Albemarle for nearly 30 years in the Albemarle Police Department with the final 11 years as Chief of Police.  In 2011, Ronnie was elected to serve the Citizens of Albemarle District 3 as City Council Member.  In 2013, Ronnie was elected to the position of Mayor for the City of Albemarle.

Ronnie is married to the former Sarah Cranford.  They have two daughters and three grandchildren.  Ronnie and Sarah are members of First Presbyterian Church in Albemarle having served as Deacon and Elder.  “Family, Church and Community are the most important things in life.  We must first honor these if we want to be a positive leader for our city and the citizens we represent.”

Ronnie is the son of the late Gerald Michael, a city employee for 42 years and Betty a long time employee of Wiscassett Mills and American & Efird.  Growing up around city employees and the textile community helps him understand where the city has changed over the years.   After working in public safety for all of those years, the safety of our families will always be a top priority, however we must look to improve our economic future.  The City must use the resources we have to move forward in our efforts to attract employers.  We have the infrastructure, water, sewer, electric and roads that make us an attractive option for potential new companies.  We must market ourselves to these companies.  “In  the position of Mayor, I must represent all of the people and do my best to make the decisions that are appropriate in any situation.  I must strive to make our community as business friendly as possible and look for ways to attract business to our city and the surrounding county.  We have the resources to provide any utilities or infrastructure for any business willing to locate or expand in our community.  We must show business we are here to assist and work with them.”

Over the years, Ronnie has been involved in many different Boards and Committees.  This experience allows him to draw upon the knowledge of many different individuals.  “I have always been willing to listen to others and make decisions after I have the needed information.  In this position I am asking for the thoughts and input of others.  The City Council feels the same as I do.  Please contact any Council Member or myself and provide your thoughts.”

Ronnie remains actively involved in many areas of the community and invites you to contact him with suggestions to improve our community at:
